why do I blog?

9 / 19 / 13

life journeyWelcome to Post #100, friends!

The obvious question, at such a pivotal, historic moment; what to blog about?  I pondered the possibilities. And then I pondered some more.  At the end of the day, however, the answer seemed obvious.  It simply must be the answer to YOUR burning question.  “WHY (the heck) do you (I) blog…?”

This is a question that I am often asked by people who do not blog.  Or even know what a blog really IS! According to the Merrium-Webster Dictionary; “blog” is defined as follows: “A web site on which someone writes about personal opinions, activities, and experiences”.  So there it is.  Pretty simple concept.  But that is merely the definition.  I still have not told you WHY I blog.  There are several reasons.  Pull up a seat, friends, and get comfortable…

journey

Blogging is really not that different than someone who journals with pen and paper in a pretty little book that is safely tucked away in their nightstand.  The only real difference, basically, is the fact that Bloggers choose to share their “journal” with the world!  Or, at a minimum,  anyone who will listen!  Blogging is very much a creative outlet for me.  A way to share, with you, my daily life experiences – my passions, joys, triumphs… and even my sorrows. Blogging keeps me present in the moment(s).  MY moments…  MY life…  I journey through my day with a heightened sense of awareness as to what is happening all around me. Every experience has the possibility of becoming part of a blog.  A beautiful sunset, an event that moved me to tears, a conversation with a stranger new friend in the grocery checkout lane, a mouthwatering dish at a favorite restaurant…  So often I find myself pausing to take in the moment, rather than rushing right through it. Affirming gratitude in my daily life.  And this is good.

In the “blogging world” there are people who blog about absolutely EVERYTHING!!!  I am, apparently, what is referred to as a “lifestyle blogger“. Basically, I am random and don’t fit into any specific “categories”.  Ya. OK.  I’m good with that.  That is who I am.  My blog is “live happy“.  Definition:  I blog about family & food; creativity & cocktails; homemade & humor; motherhood & marriage; parties & procrastination; girlfriends & gratitude;  London & laughter…

To put it simply – blogging about my life makes me happy.  And having people follow my blogs, like my blog posts or comment…?  Ahhhh….. Very, very happy!!!  My goal is to share a little piece of my world with you, in the hopes that we will connect.  And I so hope that we do.

do dogs really smile…?

9 / 15 / 13

enjoy the rideDo you think that dogs actually smile?  I’m not saying “are they happy?” –  I mean, do they really s m i l e…?  I say Yes.  Definitely.  We have 2 dogs.  The white dog is Tobie  and the black dog is Ellie.  Together, they are just referred to as “the girls“.  Ya, I know.  Tobie is a boy name.  She is a tomboy at heart.  Lifts her leg to go potty, burps after she eats… So what would you have suggested; “Princess”?  Two more opposite dogs you will never meet.  Their nicknames are as follows (Ellie/Tobie) Needy & Greedy; Crazy & Lazy.  Ellie never stops.  Wants to play fetch 24/7.  This is NOT an exaggeration.  Ask anyone.  She never, ever, ever gets tired. Ellie is best known for body slamming into walls, often head first, kamikaze style while playing fetch. Perhaps one too many times… This has also earned her the additional nickname of “Google eyes”.  Let’s just say that sometimes Ellie appears to be looking in several different directions at once.  (Think “Ed”, the hyena from Lion King..)  Yep –  Having someone throw the ball is Ellie’s nirvana.  It is DEFINITELY what makes her smile.   Tobie; well…. not so much.  An all day nap really suits Tobie just fine.  Preferably in the warm sunshine.  Unless there is food.  ANY food.  And by “food”, I mean anything that is on the floor… Paper clips, buttons, paper towels, screws…  So what makes Tobie smile? Besides a sample of pork tenderloin (blame the hubbie; I give her apples and kale!), it would have to be her kids.  Tobie LOVES having her kids home. Hands down, NOTHING makes her happier.  Yep.  They are definitely Tobie’s reason to smile!

walk 2walk 1

As opposite as they are, they really are “best buds”.  There is one common denominator that makes them BOTH grin ear to ear, equally, and that is going for a walk!! Just say the words, and they begin “the happy dance“… big grins as they hop like little bunnies and run in circles.  And this happy state continues throughout the entire walk.  Today was no exception.  It was a beautiful, peaceful Sunday morning, and I felt quite reflective as we strolled the neighborhood…  Watching their complete delight in the smallest of things… sniffing the trees (EVERY tree, in fact!), chasing a butterfly, checking out an abandoned toy in someone’s front yard, investigating what might be under a fluffy bush… It made me stop and think.  I was taken back to my reflection four days ago on 9/11; my blog post “a life to live over” (Erma Bombeck).  Conclusion?  Wouldn’t we all be a little better off if we approached life a little more like a dog?  Hmmm….  Think about that.  There are literally hundreds of little things in a day that can make you smile – IF you take the time to pause and enjoy them.  But do you?  I think we all try; but life, and deadlines, and “to do” lists, and complications… they all get in our way, don’t they.  So I guess we just need to try a little harder.  Yep.  Perhaps we just need to think, and smile, more like a dog…

a life to live over…

9 / 11 / 13

live your lifeSo we are two days into our kitchen remodel (Yes. Will definitely blog about it!!) So I’m kinda, sorta stuck at home for the most part.  Let me just say that this really makes it kind of difficult to procrastinate about this cleaning, clearing and purging “cycle” that I am in.  I said difficult.  Not impossible.

Today I found a (huge) stack of inspirational articles that I have collected throughout the years from emails, the newspaper, friends…  I found it to be pretty much like going through a box of pictures.  You know… Two hours go by, and you are all emotional entangled in a trip down memory lane – Yet, remarkably, the pile is still huge.

balloons

With today being the anniversary of 9/11 – we all awakened this morning with a heightened sense of “life”.  And family.  And loved ones.  And those we have lost…  A reminder about living in the moment, because today is a gift.  With that in my heart, I stumbled across a poem that came via email many, many moons ago.  I cannot tell you the source, or even who sent it to me.  What I can tell you, however, is that it was written by someone that I would have LOVED to meet; someone who has always made me laugh… Erma Bombeck.  I felt that sharing her wisdom and insight was a beautiful way to give meaning to a most difficult day…  Thank you, Erma xo

Erma BombeckIf I Had My Life to Live Over  (by Erma Bombeck)

I would have talked less and listened more.

I would have eaten the popcorn in the “GOOD” living room and worried much less about the dirt when someone wanted to light a fire in the fireplace.

I would have invited friends over to dinner even if the carpet was stained and the sofa faded.

I would have taken the time to listen to my grandfather ramble about his youth.

I would never have insisted the car windows be rolled up on a summer day because my hair had just been teased and sprayed.

I would have burned the pink candle sculpted like a rose before it melted in storage.

I would have sat on the lawn with my children and not worried about grass stains.

I would have cried and laughed less while watching television and more while watching life.

I would have gone to bed when I was sick instead of pretending the earth would go into a holding pattern if I weren’t there for the day.

I would never have bought anything just because it was practical, wouldn’t show soil or was guaranteed to last a lifetime.

Instead of wishing away nine months of pregnancy, I’d have cherished every moment realizing that the wonderment growing inside me was the only chance in life to assist God in a miracle.

When my kids kissed me impetuously, I would never have said, “Later. Now go get washed up for dinner.”

There would have been more “I love you’s” and more “I’m sorry’s”

….but mostly, given another shot at life, I would seize every minute…..look at it and really see it … live it … and never give it back.

wedded bliss

9 / 9 / 13

AnnDinM&PHad to tell a little lie the other day…  but I can explain.  You see, my wonderful mom-in-law and dad-in-law were celebrating 55 years of wedded bliss, so we decided to have a little surprise dinner at our house in their honor.  Not a major event, just a small gathering of family to help them celebrate.  In the end, I think there were almost twenty of us gathered together, and it was an evening full of laughter, love and a lot of wine!

Now everyone has their secret tips for making events, like this, successful…  and I would love to know your secrets!!  Here are just a couple of mine.  #1  Delegate!  Let everyone contribute.  For those who don’t like to cook; no problem.  Assign them a store bought item or wine!  #2  Not everything has to be homemade!  If you are a baker and love to make desserts; Go for it – But then purchase a store bought appetizer!  #3 Prioritize and keep it simple!  This is a big one, and totally varies from person to person!!  Personally, I love the detail stuff – “themes” and table decorations, homemade tags on the dipping oil… But to take the time to dust before the party…?  Ya – Probably not gonna happen.  Like I said; this is an individual thing.  Everyone has a different set of priorities. Maybe dusting is your #1 priority!!   Just make sure that you make time to do the things that are important to you!!

AnnDin5AnnDin3AnnDin1AnnDinBiscotti

We went with an Italian bistro theme…  complete with a little Frank Sinatra (of course!), red & white checked paper placemats (super easy clean up!) and some Chianti wine!  An Italian platter as an appetizer also made it super simple (no cooking!) – cheese, salami, Rosemary almonds, stuffed olives, crostini with goat cheese and bruschetta…  Our main course consisted of home-made lasagna, meatballs, oven roasted Italian green beans, Italian salad and warm, crusty bread with homemade Italian dipping oil.  (Dipping oil recipe was posted on my Facebook page; “Tasty Tuesday” Sept 3 – Click here)  For dessert we served Italian gelato with homemade biscotti, which I served in assorted hand-painted martini glasses (Biscotti recipe coming…  tomorrow!!)  And that, friends, is my final “tip of the day” – fun and super simple… I love using martini glasses for serving dessert!  I especially love that everyone’s glass was different (I did this on purpose – Not a matchy-matchy kinda gal!), but you can certainly use whatever martini glasses you have on hand!!  I have a huge advantage in the fact that I paint and sell cocktail glasses, so my “inventory” is probably a bit more extensive… Ha!

So there we go.  My suggestions, in a nutshell, for hosting a little gathering of your own.  I realize now that I already gave you my “final tip”, but I just thought of one more… and it’s a BIGGIE, actually!  Chances are good that you will not complete your “things to do before the party” list.  Just sayin.  However, once the party starts… let it go.  Pour a glass of wine and join in the fun.  Whatever didn’t get done isn’t gonna get done… so never mind.  If you are having a good time at your party, so will your friends!!  And at the end of the day, isn’t that all that really matters…?  Bon Appetit!!

missing Herb

9 / 7 / 13

rosemary thymeSo it’s September.  Wow.  I guess it’s fair to say that we will be saying goodbye to summertime before long.  So what will you miss as we say farewell to this most beloved of seasons?  Hmmm…   One of the things that really gets to me at the close of summer is saying goodbye to my summer herb garden.   Makes me sad. I just love my herbs.  Yep.  Love to cook with them throughout the summer.  The ability to walk just outside my door to snip fresh herbs for dinner… priceless!  But, quite honestly,  I also enjoy just having them nearby.  I know; weird.  But when I’m watering, I love to just run my fingers through the leaves; the intoxicating fragrance of lavender, rosemary, basil, mint… Love .  And then I have a little friend bee, named “Buzzy”, who likes to hang out with me early in the morning.  Along with “Herb” (with an “H”).  He is the little (ceramic) pig who lives in the herb garden.  OK – Perhaps I sound like a bit of a crazy woman at this point.  Hard to argue, really…

But I will tell you who does understand.  My friend, Martha.  Yep – Martha Stewart.  Not only has Martha come up with a delicious way to savor my summer basil well into the winter months; she has done it dairy free!  Yes maam… We’re talking pesto without cheese!!  And the icing on the cake?  Martha says that it actually freezes better than traditional pesto with cheese!  Wow, Martha!   “You had me at hello…”  Thanks!!

the ten dollar smile

9 / 3 / 13

park placeWhat can you really get for $10 these days..?  A fancy coffee drink and (maybe) a muffin?  A couple gallons of gas? Unfortunately, we live in a world where things of value, things that matter, are gonna set you back a bit.  It’s just the way things are these days, and we have to accept that.  Or do we…?

Met some friends, two other couples, the other morning for breakfast at a little local area called “Park Place”, here in Kansas City.  Following an early morning thunderstorm, the sun had returned and the skies were a glorious blue, so we all sat outside and chatted over coffee for a couple of hours.  Afterwards, the hubbie and I decided that we needed to stretch our legs after sitting for so long, so we strolled the outdoor shops, hitting a couple of “end of season sidewalk sales”.   By the time we hit late afternoon, we both admitted that our stomachs were grumbling a bit, and all of the little sidewalk cafes had started “Happy Hour”.  Perfect timing for a glass of wine, some olives and a little hummus.  So you might be thinking that this is the end of the story, but it’s not.  You see, I haven’t told you everything...

What I didn’t mention yet, was the time between strolling the shops and Happy Hour…  As it was, we popped out of one of the stores, and were immediately greeted with the sounds of a sidewalk musician – a lone guitarist with a voice a lot like “The Fray”. So we did what we knew we had to do. We pulled up a spot near the music and the fountains and settled into one of the brightly painted adirondack chairs for a little R&R in the glorious Sunday sunshine.  As we all know, shopping can be absolutely EXHAUSTING for men!! (If you squint real hard on the pic above, you will see the guitarist on the far right of the pic, through the water droplets; and the hubbie is sitting next to my green chair, in a blue shirt, shades on, eyes closed…)  The guy played his heart out, while folks strolled by and smiled, children ran in and out of the fountains, oblivious to anything but their own innocent joy, nearby sidewalk diners clapped politely…

Row of Trees in Meadows, Mountain Range in Background. November Mood. Now I don’t know this young man’s story.  At all.  Was he paid by the merchants?  Does he do this on the side, or is music his sole source of income; his passion?  Did he know that we enjoyed the fact that he was there… that day… playing those songs… making our day a little brighter…?  As I was up snapping this pic, he announced that it was his last song, and he thanked everyone who was there and wished them happiness for the rest of their day.  My hubbie smiled at me and stood up, walking over to the young man.  He had no “tip bucket” of any kind, so the hubbie merely thanked him for the gift of his music, and handed him a small token of gratitude.  His eyes lit up with a sincere appreciation was so genuine it made my heart ache.  A smile that was so worth every last penny…  Be the reason.

time marches on…

7 / 15 / 13

Lauren & Kyle highchairs

OK – So I’m still supposed to be on my “summer sabbatical” from all social media.   But I’m kinda sad today… and I just needed to tell someone.  So I’ll make it quick.  Then it doesn’t really count…?

After a restless night’s sleep, I awakened with this gnawing, empty feeling way down in my gut that only a mom would know.  It was that helpless feeling of time marching on; whether you agreed to be part of the band… or not.  You see, my babies turned 23 today.  Without me.  Yep – The very first time that they have been away from us on their birthday.  Now before you start telling me all of that logical, “after all, they are ADULTS now“, baloney, let me just say right up front that I get all that.  I, honestly, could not be more proud of the adult children that we have raised. We feel that we have been mightily blessed and thank God for them each and every day. xo

But moms want need to feel needed sometimes… Ok, maybe all the time?  I dunno.  It varies.  My sister and I were talking on the phone last night about this very thing.  We complain about having to drive them all around town when they are little… here, there and everywhere.  Some days are endless.  Then they go off and get their driver’s license.  That’s great news, right?  Sure it is.  Until that moment when you wake up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat realizing that they don’t need you to drive them anywhere… anymore.  Time marches on.  Your job there is done.

You see, the heart is not the brain.  These two body parts operate quite independently of one another.  There is logic, and then there is love.  In my logical brain, I am so happy for them today.  They are with each other, and they are with good friends.  Everything is exactly the way it should be; and this is good.  Time marches on.

But deep in my soul, they will always be my babies… and today, selfishly, my heart aches like crazy.

remembering memorial day

5 / 26 / 13

memorial-day-final_12“No one has greater love than the one who gives his life for his friends.”  John 15:13

Memorial Day is about remembering those brave and selfless men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice.  Their life.  For us.

So this weekend, we bow our heads, say a prayer and whisper towards heaven… Thank you. Thank you.

In honor of – I strongly encourage you to check out both of these videos. They bring me to tears each time that I watch them…

“thank you” and “Proud to be An American”.  Enough said.

“the chew”

5 / 16 / 13

the chew 3Is it possible to actually GAIN weight while working out on the treadmill…?

Many of you already  know that I love to watch “The Chew” on ABC.  I tape it and watch it religiously while I am on the treadmill.  This, my friends, is right up there (on the intelligence scale) with going grocery shopping after an excruciating week-long fast….  Watching them cook all of this delicious, mouth-watering food while exercising…?  Pure torture!  Sometimes, if I have an extra episode “in the bank”, I will treat myself to watching while I am cooking dinner.  With a glass of wine.  Much, much better…!

the chew tickets

Now the hubbie and I have a list of TV show favs; including Downton Abbey, Modern Family, The Middle, Shark Tanks; but “The Chew“…?  Well that’s MY show!!   Needless to say; going to a taping of “The Chew” is DEFINITELY on my bucket list.  But I’m not stoppin’ there!  No, No, NO!!  I want to be on the tasting panel, as well!! Yes maam.  I wanna be right up there where I can be a part of the action!! Smell the garlic, maybe answer a question, get a close up of Carla & Clinton dancing… and, of course, SAMPLE THE FOOD!!!

the chew 2

Until that time comes, however; I have “The Chew” book that I love. It really is a great cookbook that is packed with lots of ‘extras”… Each recipe is coded (ie “light & healthy”, “5-in-5″…) plus an indication of skill level and price range.  Also included – Q&A with each individual host.  Great book!  So you’re probably wondering to yourself at this point… “Hmmm… Does she have a fav”?  Nope.  Love ’em all.  But each one for a different reason.  Michael Symon is just as sweet and sincere as can be and makes me laugh.  I love the way he talks so lovingly about his wife, Liz.   Mario Batali makes me want to open up a bottle of wine, buy a pair of orange crocs and book a flight to Italy. OK… actually that’s a “no” on the orange crocs.   Daphne Oz cooks the way I try to cook (most of the time, anyway) and she fills my brain with so much good healthy (practical) advice. Love her attitude towards food.  Carla Hall pumps up my ENERGY level and fills my head with “sweet” thoughts. Great dancer, too!!  Just watching her is a real workout!  And Clinton Kelly…?  Have been a fan since “What Not to Wear”.  Love.  All I can say about Clinton Kelly is…  Make me a cocktail, baby, and “LET’S CRAFT”!!

So you say you don’t cook?  Well watch it anyway.  The tagline on their book is “Food. Life. Fun.” They are fun and you will have fun.  As different and unique as they are individually, there is so much chemistry between them which makes it all come together.  For a little taste of a “non-cooking” segment (no pun intended… ha!), I have a couple of cute video clips for you to watch.  For the “Pie throwdown”; click HERE .  For the “Pie throwdown, explained…”; click HERE .

tasty trashy tators

Smoothie

Oh ya…  And as for my original statement/question…  “Is it possible to actually GAIN weight while working out on the treadmill…?” Well I’m gonna say “yes” after watching a taped show from Monday, May 13.  I give you exhibit 1: “Wendy Bradley’s Tasty Trashy Taters”.  Two words: tater tots and bacon.  Ok; I know.  That’s three words.  You get my point, however.  If I made these for my (college) son and his buddies… Wowza!  “And the mother of the year award goes to…”.  (The crowd goes wild.)  Ya.  That’s what I’m talkin’ about.  But I’m telling you, I seriously think that I gained weight just watching.  Everyone was going on and on and on… (please stop talking!) about how super-duper YUM they were.  And I was SO, SO hungry at this point.  What to do???  Lucky for me, there were no tater tots OR bacon in my freezer.  But, lucky for me, I did have all the ingredients for a super healthy breakfast smoothie.  Yes; I know.  Daphne would be so proud of me…

that’s my mama

5 / 12 / 13

mother quoteIf I had a nickel for every time my mom said; “Oh my – You are just. like. your. father!”  Now, mind you, this is usually stated in a rather loud voice, and is not to be mistaken as a compliment. At least not at the time that she is broadcasting this fact.

Eiffel tower & underwear

Research states that we have a tendency towards either left-brained or right-brained thinking.  I “think” that I am, however, the exception to the rule. (And I think that I think this from my left-sided thinker.  Ha!  Kinda “Dr. Seuss-ish”!).  I really do believe that I am pretty close to a 50/50 split.  50% left brained, like my dad.  Logical, analytical, mathematical, thrifty, conservative and stubborn (Mama no like that last one…!).  But…  I am ALSO a right-brained thinker, like my mom.  We are creative, intuitive, spiritual; possibility thinkers (dreamers) with a hint of mischief. OK.  On occasion, slightly more than a hint… (Did I tell you the story about when my mom was a little girl at (Catholic) “summer camp”…?  Snuck into the nuns tent when they were sleeping and hung their “double D’s” out on the clothesline for all to enjoy…)

Growing up as the oldest of seven, I was “Mama’s little helper” from day one.  My “maternal instincts” developed at a very early age.  Some of my brothers have been known to throw the word “bossy” around (what the heck??) when we are reminiscing about days gone by… their rough life growing up with two older sisters. Ya… whatever.  Let me just say, in my own defense, that – to this day – I would do anything in my power to protect my sister or any of my brothers from anyone or anything.  Family, ALL FAMILY, is my beginning and my end.  Period.

children cartoon

My mom taught me SO much about life, love, happiness…  Those lessons and experiences helped shape me into the woman, wife and mom that I am today.  Looking back, there were so many things that I did not understand, so many unanswered questions… all crystal clear once I became a mom myself.  I have to laugh now, thinking back on the days when she would declare that “for the rest of the day“, we were not allowed to use the word “Mom”.  Or “Mommy”. Or anything even remotely close.  Pam.  We had to call her Pam. Alrighty then.  Pam it is. That’s my mama.

mothers day quote

As far back as I can remember, my mom always encouraged me to be me.  I’m a little (Ha!) “out of the box” at times, but she has always supported and embraced that part of my soul, allowing me to grow into my authentic self.  Truth be told, I am still growing into that “authentic self”, and she is still there supporting and encouraging me every step of the way.  Yep. That’s my mama.  My mom makes me laugh.  A lot.  Belly laughs that make you cry. My mom is funny, and I love that about her.  Sometimes when you’re down and out,  you just need someone to tell you to “put your big girl panties on and deal with it“.  Well, friends… that’s NOT my mama.  Sometimes, however, you need someone to rub your back (even if it’s long distance), tell you that it’s OK to cry and reassure you that everything is going to be OK.  Even when it’s not.  That’s my mama.

So today I say, thank you mom… for everything that you are; I am; we are.  From now until forever, I will always be proud to say…

IMG_4294

Yep.  That’s my mama…xo

Oh… and P.S. – You still make the best “homemade, from scratch” cinnamon rolls on. the. planet.  Enough said.
